This beautiful bay is at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island and well worth a visit. Visit Takaka on your way to historic Collingwood, which is the starting point of a safari to the internationally significant bird habitat and unique geological and topographical features of Farewell Spit. The Nelson area has the highest sunshine hours in all of New Zealand and much of that sunshine helps produce wonderful local wines. There are no fewer than 23 wineries in the Nelson region, all within an easy drive from Lakeside Lodge or, if you prefer to be driven, there are organised tours of the vineyards which we can arrange for you.
Art and Craft galleries are sprinkled throughout our area - with local artists producing some of New Zealand's most creative work. Call in and meet the artists - their studios are often within the gallery. WOW - Nelson's World of Wearable Art Museum is definitely worth visiting and because it is situated beside a very special car museum, there is something for everyone.
And of course there's trout fishing, cast your line and catch a trout. See more about fly fishing for trout in New Zealand here.
Renowned as one of the most beautiful national parks in the world - the Abel Tasman is NZ's smallest national park (22000 Hectares). Predominantly a coastal park admired for its golden sandy bays, tranquil lagoons, rocky outcrops and unmodified estuaries. The world famous coastal track (one of New Zealand's Great Walks) features stunning coastal views and tremendous beaches. You can also access the park by regular water taxi services, take a cruise, or sea kayak as well as by road to the beginning of the park at Marahau.
Kahurangi National Park is a classic New Zealand national park - huge, wild and rich in the plants and animals that make NZ unique. Created in 1996, it is one of New Zealand's newest national parks. It covers 4520km2 in the north west of the South Island. It is the second largest of New Zealand's fourteen national parks.
The Flora car park and lookout at an elevation of 945m is one of the most popular access points to the park and is located only 17kms from Lakeside Lodge. There are a network of tracks ranging from short walks to multi-day alpine hiking trips from the Flora Car Park.
The Heaphy Track (another of New Zealand's Great Walks) travels through the park, ending on the West Coast and is a great multi-day hike.
The park consists of 102 hectares of beech forests, valleys, isolated glacial lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa, craggy peaks, clear streams and is home to many native birds.
There are networks of short tracks exploring forest, lake shore and glacial features in both lakes or longer tracks climbing through beech forest to viewpoints above Lake Rotoiti.
Should you wish to enjoy a multi-day walk (or tramp as we call them in New Zealand) we can arrange dropoffs and collection for you and you can leave your vehicle conveniently at the Lodge.
